Enlarged Prostate (BPH)

Enlarged Prostate (BPH)

The Urology specialists at Warren Clinic offer Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate or HoLEP - a minimally invasive option for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), also know as enlarged prostate. Not every man diagnosed with BPH will need or want surgery. It is important to talk to your urologist about potential benefits and side-effects of all treatment options.

What is BPH

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a common, non-cancerous condition that occurs as men age. The prostate enlarges and can partially or completely obstruct urine flow.

Symptoms of BPH

Common symptoms of BPH include:
  • Week or slow urination
  • Dribbling of urine
  • Hesitancy or difficulty starting to urinate
  • Frequent urination
  • Feeling of urgency or sudden need to urinate
As BPH progresses, serious side-effects can occur. These include:
  • Bladder stones
  • Bladder infection
  • Blood in urine
  • Damage to kidneys from back pressure caused by retaining large amounts of extra urine in the bladder
  • Sudden blockage of the urinary tube, making urination impossible

How Does HoLEP Work?

HoLEP uses lasers to remove obstructing prostate tissue caused by BPH. The procedure scoops the tissue out, leaving just the prostate capsule in place. Because the tissue is removed in tact, rather than ablated, doctors can examine the tissue for cancer cells or other abnormalities.

Generally, HoLEP patients get immediate relief from symptoms and are discharged from the hospital the next-day.

Who Can HoLEP Help?

HoLEP is beneficial for those men have blocked urine flow from BPH. The procedure can be used on any size of prostate gland, even larger ones where other transurethral surgeries may not work.

HoLEP Surgery: What to Expect

Before the surgery, be sure to let your Urologist know all the medications (prescribed and over-the-counter) you are taking. They may want you to hold taking certain ones until after your surgery.

  1. The surgery is usually done under general anesthesia.
  2. Depending on the size of your prostate, the surgery will take one to three hours.
  3. The average hospital stay is one day.

Once home, many patients report being tired for a week or two. If you experience increasing frequency, burning or difficulty urinating, please let your Urologist know. About 20 percent of men experience some bleeding for up to two weeks. Increasing your fluid intake should help stop this bleeding, but if it worsens, let your Urologist know.
