A cancer diagnosis often comes with little warning. An accurate diagnosis is critical for receiving the most effective cancer treatment as early as possible. Saint Francis cancer specialists are trained to evaluate and treat patients with cancer and hematologic disorders (involving the blood and blood-forming organs).
What is Medical Oncology
Medical oncology is the area of medicine that focuses on cancer, its causes and treatment. Medical oncologists are physician specialists who oversee the medical care and individualized treatment plans and therapies for cancer patients. They collaborate with other medical professionals to determine the best options and manage a patient's course of treatment.
Treatments may include:
- chemotherapy;
- hormone therapy; and/or
- biological agents such as monoclonal antibodies and immunology.
Seamless Care for Patients
In addition to overseeing treatments, our cancer specialists also provide comprehensive care for patients by:
- Educating the patient about his or her form of cancer and the stages of its development
- Discussing treatment options and making recommendations that are right for that particular patient
- Monitoring the care and treatment of the patient throughout the course of the disease
- Working with the patient to improve the quality of life through healing therapy and in the management of pain and symptoms
