Valve Disease

The heart includes four tiny — but very important — valves. Heart valve disease occurs when one or more of these valves doesn't work properly. Some people are born with heart valve disease, while others acquire it later in life.

Signs of Heart Valve Disease

Some people with heart valve disease may not experience any symptoms. Other may experience them early on - and still others, several years later. Signs and symptoms to watch for include:

  • Heart Murmur
  • Unusual Fatigue
  • Shortness of breath, particularly when you have been active or when lying down
  • Swelling of your legs, ankles, feet, abdomen and veins in the neck
  • Dizziness
  • Fainting
  • Irregular heartbeat

Heart Valve Disease Treatment

Depending on the severity of your disease, treatment for heart valve conditions can include medicines to help control symptoms, lifestyle changes or repairing/replacing valves surgically.

Scheduling an Appointment

To explore your risks or to learn more about heart valve disease, schedule an appointment with your primary care provider. They can determine if your symptoms are a sign of a more common ailment or if a cardiologist visit is recommended.
