Vein Disorders
Our veins play an important role in circulation by returning deoxygenated blood back to the heart and lungs from other areas in the body. This process is a crucial part of how our cardiovascular system works.
The board certified cardiovascular specialists at Saint Francis' vein clinics in Tulsa and Muskogee are specially trained to care for venous diseases and offer a wide range of treatments, including minimally invasive treatments such as endovenous laser treatment (VenaCure EVLT™) for varicose veins.
Types of Vein Disease
When a venous disease is present, the walls of the veins in the legs are deteriorated and some of its valves become defective. Additionally, as we age, our veins can encounter a variety of complications and problems arise. Some of these problems are minor while others can be life-threatening; therefore, it is important to take your vein health seriously.
Varicose Veins
Also known as superficial vein disease and venous insufficiency, varicose veins may be cosmetic or may be a sign of a more serious vein disease. Varicose veins are gnarled; enlarged veins and the most common veins affected are those in your legs and feet.

Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)
Deep Vein Thrombosis, or DVT, occurs when a blood clot forms in a deep vein leading to either a partial or complete blockage of circulation. DVT usually develops in the lower leg, thigh or pelvis and while it is not life threatening, it can lead to a pulmonary embolism if the blood clot breaks free and travels to the lungs.

Pulmonary Embolism (PE)
A Pulmonary Embolism (PE) occurs when part or all of a blood clot breaks off and travels to the lungs from the legs or, in rare cases, other parts of the body. Pulmonary embolism is a serious condition that can cause permanent damage to the affected lung, low oxygen levels in your blood, or damage to other organs in your body from not getting enough oxygen. If a clot is large, or if there are many clots, pulmonary embolism can cause death.
