Saint Francis Hospice Volunteers

Volunteers are an important part of the Saint Francis Hospice program. Volunteers are able to provide companionship to a patient while also giving family members an opportunity to run errands or simply rest. Utilizing our hospice volunteers gives family members a chance to regroup and ultimately, provide better care for their loved one.

Hospice Volunteer Programs

  • Administrative Volunteers: Administrative volunteers provide help to the Saint Francis Hospice staff with data entry, filing, sending cards and notes, and organizing books and folders.
  • Student Volunteers: Our summer-only student volunteer program offers a great opportunity for students to make a difference in our department operations. We welcome ages 14-17 and ask for a minimum commitment of four hours a week for six weeks, totaling 24 volunteer hours. Prospective volunteers must be currently enrolled in high school. • Comfort Cart: Comfort cart volunteers visit Saint Francis Hospital and take the comfort cart to rooms of Saint Francis Hospice patients. The comfort cart is stocked with items such as puzzles and snacks. The cart creates an opportunity for the volunteer to assess whether the family would like a break while the volunteer stays with the patient as needed.
  • Patient Support Visitors and Caregiver Relief: Patient support visitors provide companionship to patient(s) . Volunteers help by making care visits, socializing with the patient, reading to patients, watching TV or movies, playing music, or running errands
  • Birthday Balloons: Help deliver these uplifting surprises
  • Saintly Stuffers: Saintly Stuffers are a group of volunteers that meet the third Wednesday of each month to complete a large mailing for Saint Francis Hospice Bereavement Services. This involves stuffing envelopes and applying address labels.
  • Sewing Projects: Many times there are various sewing projects that are needed, from blankets to memory pillows.
  • We Honor Veterans: Volunteers honor patients who have served in the military with a ceremony, which usually takes place at the patient’s home. It is not required that the volunteer be a veteran, but it is special for the volunteer and patient if both have served in the military.

All volunteers receive extensive training focused on learning the goals and philosophy of hospice care and understanding the responsibilities and duties of caring for patients and their families. The training covers the physical, emotional and spiritual aspects of death and dying.
