Hospice Care

Many of us have helped care for a sick family member or friend at home. The goal of that care is often to help alleviate suffering and provide both physical and emotional support.

Promoting Quality of Life

Hospice care is designed for people with a life-threatening illness. These patients and their families have special physical, psychological, social and spiritual needs.

The Saint Francis Hospice program provides the comfort and supportive care needed by patients and their families. Hospice is not a place—it is a concept of caring. Hospice neither accelerates dying nor artificially prolongs life. The primary focus of hospice care is to offer expertise in controlling the patient's pain and other physical symptoms while the patient remains in his or her home environment.

As a not-for-profit, hospital-based organization, Saint Francis Hospice is dedicated to providing quality and compassionate end-of-life care for each of our patients and their families. Saint Francis Hospice is a Medicare-certified program and is accredited by The Joint Commission.

Your Hospice Team

Saint Francis Hospice utilizes a multidisciplinary approach to the management of patients. This means many different medical specialties come together to work toward the goal of controlling the patient's pain and symptoms. The Saint Francis Hospice team consists of:

Bart Rider, D.O.
Medical Director

  • Personal Physician: coordinates the complete medical care of the hospice patient.
  • Medical Director: provides medical direction for the hospice program and acts as a resource for the hospice team.
  • Registered Nurses (RN): specially trained nurses provide expertise in pain and symptom management. RNs make home visits and assist with all aspects of the patient's care.
  • Home Health Aides: make home visits to assist with activities of day living, such as bathing and dressing.
  • Social Workers: assist the patient and family with legal and financial services.
  • Spiritual Counselor: non-denominational counseling available for affirmation of faith or assistance in finding spiritual peace.
  • Pharmacists: assist with medication management.
  • After-Hours Case Managers: specially trained registered nurses who are available and on-call seven days a week, 24 hours a day.
  • Volunteers: trained individuals available to be a "good neighbor" to the patient and family by providing a variety of good deeds.
  • Bereavement Support Counseling: provides bereavement services to families or significant others of hospice patients for at least 13 months after the death of the patient through mail or phone correspondence. Individual counseling and support groups are also available.
