What is a Child Life Specialist?

A child life specialist coordinates programs designed to meet the non-medical, specialized needs of hospitalized children and their families. Responsibilities include:

  • Planning developmentally and therapeutically appropriate activities during hospitalization
  • Promoting effective coping through play, preparation, education, and self-expression activities
  • Providing emotional support for patients and families

Becoming a Child Life Specialist

In order to work as a Child Life Specialist, the following qualifications must be met:

  • Completion of a bachelor's degree program in child development or a related field
  • Completion of a 480-hour child life internship (Saint Francis does not currently offer internships)
  • Certification as a Certified Child Life Specialist (CCLS)
