What is a Child Life Specialist?
A child life specialist coordinates programs designed to meet the non-medical, specialized needs of hospitalized children and their families. Responsibilities include:
- Planning developmentally and therapeutically appropriate activities during hospitalization
- Promoting effective coping through play, preparation, education, and self-expression activities
- Providing emotional support for patients and families
Becoming a Child Life Specialist
In order to work as a Child Life Specialist, the following qualifications must be met:
- Completion of a bachelor's degree program in child development or a related field
- Completion of a 480-hour child life internship (Saint Francis does not currently offer internships)
- Certification as a Certified Child Life Specialist (CCLS)
