Ask for Recommendations
One of the best ways to find a pediatrician is to ask your friends and family for recommendations. They know you best and can help you decide if their recommendation would be a good fit for you and your family. Also, consider asking your OBGYN. She will know local pediatricians who are competent and respected within the medical community.
Meeting Potential Pediatricians
Once you have a few names of pediatricians to consider, make an appointment during your final months of pregnancy to sit down and interview them. Many pediatricians are happy to fit these types of interviews into their busy schedules. If possible, both parents should attend the interviews to make sure you agree with the doctor's policies and philosophy of care.
Questions to Ask a Pediatrician
- Is the doctor accepting new patients?
- Does the office take your insurance plan?
- Is the pediatrician board certified?
- Are there separate waiting areas for sick and healthy children?
- How are questions or calls between appointments handled?
Office staff, or a nurse, may be able to answer some questions before your interview. A personal interview with a pediatrician will tell you whether they "click" with your family. Write down important questions ahead of time.
