Gynecological cancers aren’t as common as breast cancer, but they can be just as deadly. That’s why Saint Francis Health System is committed to providing compassionate care to women with cancer affecting their reproductive system. No matter the type of gynecological cancer you may be facing, our specialists and women’s health experts are ready to create a personalized treatment plan for your specific condition.
Types of Gynecologic Cancers
There are five main types of gynecologic cancer. Some have no symptoms until they have spread past their point of origin. Other symptoms may be mistaken for spotting, a urinary tract infection or menstrual cramping. The five types are:
- Cervical cancer
- Ovarian cancer
- Uterine cancer
- Vaginal cancer
- Vulvar cancer
Although it can be traumatic to be diagnosed with cancer in your reproductive system, not all gynecologic cancers automatically cause infertility. Infertility may be avoided if the cancer is caught early, which is why annual visits to a gynecologist are so important.
Early Screenings Save Lives
If you’ve ever been to a gynecologist, you’ve probably had a pap smear, which is the most common early detection screening for cervical cancer. But there are also screenings for ovarian cancer, which is especially helpful if you know you are at high risk due to your family history.
Getting tested for HPV, or the human papillomavirus, is also important. HPV can cause some kinds of cervical, vulvar or vaginal cancers, so it’s good to know if you have it and thus are at a higher risk for these cancers. If you are under 45, you can also get vaccinated to prevent HPV, although the vaccine is thought to be less effective the older you are.
Comprehensive Cancer Care
Depending on the type of cancer you have and how far it has spread, treatment options may include minimally invasive surgery, radiation therapy or chemotherapy. Our team at Warren Clinic works with area gynecologic oncologists, if needed, to coordinate your care and provide treatment options at Saint Francis Health System.
