A galactogram, also known as a ductogram, is a method used to determine which milk ducts are the sources of abnormal nipple discharge. Saint Francis Health System offers galactography at the Breast Center at Saint Francis.
What to Expect During a Galactogram
During a galactogram, contrast is injected into the discharging duct and a mammogram is preformed to view the duct images. This procedure is helpful in:
- Diagnosing nipple discharge
- Ductal ectasia – a condition in which a lactiferous duct becomes blocked or clogged
- Fibrocystic changes
- Intraductal papillomas – tiny wart-like growths in breast tissue that cause benign nipple discharge
- Breast cancer
Having a galactogram can also accurately guide your surgeon to the ducts that may need to be removed, in case of ductal carcinoma or intraductal papillomas.
