Whether a patient is recovering from a heart attack or cardiac surgery, undergoing treatment for coronary artery disease or valve disease, or simply at high risk for developing heart disease, the cardiac rehabilitation (cardiac rehab) programs through the Saint Francis Heart and Vascular Institute provide a safe, nurturing environment for recovery and transition back to a healthy lifestyle.
Why Cardiac Rehabilitation
Cardiac rehab is an individualized heart recovery and healthy lifestyle program. Research shows that patients who participate in cardiac rehab are 25 percent less likely to experience future heart problems or complications from heart treatments. As a participant in one of our cardiac rehab programs, you will learn how the heart works and understand how to support your heart health. Many of our cardiac rehab program graduates say they appreciate learning what steps to take in managing and, ultimately, controlling their future health.

Cardiac Rehab Benefits
- Patients receive a prescribed exercise program to help facilitate recovery from a cardiac event or condition. Your cardiac rehab team will help guide you during each session and monitor your progress.
- Counseling and education help you quit smoking, maintain a healthy diet, lose weight (and maintain weight loss) and lower your blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Cardiac rehab counseling may also help manage stress levels and boost overall confidence in your health.
- Regular physical activity strengthens your heart, mind and the rest of your body. Physical activity improves your energy level and lifts your spirits, while reducing your risk of future heart attacks and cardiac problems.
What to Expect During Cardiac Rehab
At your initial visit, we'll review your health history and provide an overview of the cardiac rehab program. You'll also meet the team and have plenty of opportunities to ask questions. The following visits are generally scheduled three times a week for up to two or three months. During each visit, your heart rhythm and blood pressure are closely monitored as you are guided to develop an exercise plan. Cardiac nurses, dietitians, exercise specialists, pharmacists and counselors work together to educate participants individually and in a group setting.
Am I Covered?
Medicare and most private insurance plans cover all or most of the cost for cardiac rehab. We encourage you to contact your insurance provider to confirm eligibility and benefits before your cardiac rehab orientation. When we contact you to set up your first appointment, we will also discuss your benefits and what is covered under your insurance plan.
