Tests & Diagnosis
Saint Francis Health System, in partnership with Warren Clinic sleep specialists, offers a variety of sleep tests for those experiencing sleep disturbances. Studies are available in Tulsa, Muskogee and Vinita. One, or a combination of these tests, may be used in diagnosing the sleep disorder.
Sleep Studies and Tests Available through Saint Francis
Saint Francis sleep centers offer several tests and sleep studies including the following:
Nocturnal Polysomnogram Study (NPSG)
The Nocturnal Polysomnogram, or NPSG, test is an all-night sleep study intended to document any respiratory, neurologic or physical problem that may occur during sleep. Oftentimes, these problems may cause either an inability to sleep or excessive daytime sleepiness. Although this test is not a treatment, it can help your doctor determine whether you suffer from a sleep disorder.
Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT)
A Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT) will help determine your level of daytime sleepiness after eight hours of sleep. During this test, you will go to bed every two hours, and be allowed 20 minutes to fall asleep. If you go to sleep, you will be allowed to sleep for 15 minutes before being awakened. You will be given four to five nap tests during the day.
Continuous Positive Airway Pressure Treatment (CPAP)
This treatment is a common non-surgical option for patients who have been diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome. Airway pressure is delivered through a mask that fits over the nose. The positive pressure acts as a stint in the back of your throat to prevent structures in your throat from blocking air to and from your lungs. A technician will adjust the pressure throughout the night, and an optimal pressure setting will be recommended.
CPAP will help you stop snoring, breathe better and allow you to enter into a deeper stage of sleep. If this treatment is found to be beneficial, and your doctor prescribes its use, a home medical equipment company will instruct you on proper usage and care.
Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT)
The MWT is used to assess your level of daytime sleepiness. Although this is not a diagnostic tool, it does provide insight to the severity of the daytime sleepiness and can be used to help assess the effectiveness of treatments you may be receiving for sleep problems.
The study begins two hours after awakening and consists of five tests occurring at two-hour intervals. For each test, you will sit upright in a recliner or against the headboard of a bed. The lights are turned out and you are instructed to remain awake, but not move. The test will last a maximum of 30 minutes. Several parameters are measured continuously during the wakefulness period.
