What is Physical Medicine?
The specialty of physical medicine and rehabilitation encompasses physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy. Physical medicine may be ordered while one is in the hospital (inpatient) or for outpatient services. With nationally accredited inpatient units, state-of-the-art outpatient therapy centers and extended care, short stay and at-home options, we offer everything you need to heal—mind, body and spirt.

Occupational Therapy
Occupational therapists and their assistants work with individuals whose lives have been disrupted by illness, injury, normal aging and developmental disability. Occupational therapy programs are designed to increase a patient's independence, working to restore health, confidence and self-sufficiency.
Some common problems treated by occupational therapy are those associated with stroke, head injury, neurological disorders and related disorders that result in a decline in the ability to care for oneself.
Physical Therapy
Physical therapists provide medical support by evaluating, treating and preventing a wide variety of movement and function problems that often accompany illnesses or injuries. These hands-on specialists work with patients on an inpatient and outpatient basis, helping them increase movement potential, decrease pain and achieve therapy goals for optimal health. This could include traditional physical therapy, aquatic therapy as well as pelvic-floor therapy, among others.
Some of the more common problems treated are those associated with stroke, head injury, joint replacement, fractures, or back and neck problems.
Speech-language Pathology
Speech-language pathologists are specially trained and experienced in the evaluation and treatment of disorders of speech, language, cognition and swallowing. Speech therapy programs are designed to improve the patient's ability to communicate with family members and caregivers.
Stroke, head or neck surgery, head injury, certain cancers and neurological disorders are among the most common problems that can be treated with speech-language therapies.
