Nephrology
Healthy kidneys filter waste and excess fluids from your blood to make urine. When kidneys are damaged, they lose their filtering capacity. Damage can happen quickly (acute), such as when it’s caused by injury or toxins. Most damage, however, occurs over a period of time (chronic). The two most common causes of kidney disease are diabetes and high blood pressure.
Saint Francis nephrologists specialize in the study of the function and diseases of the kidney. An individual plan unique to your needs will address prevention methods and treatment options.
Common Kidney Conditions
Treatment of kidney disorders often involves the use of medication and/or dialysis. Patients are often referred to nephrologists for the following conditions:
- Chronic or acute renal failure
- Chronic urinary tract infections
- Hematuria (blood loss in the urine)
- Kidney stones
- Proteinuria (high levels of protein in the urine)
