Prediabetes
If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with prediabetes, it simply means your blood sugar is higher than normal, but is not yet type 2 diabetes. Early detection is key! Lifestyle and diet changes at this stage can typically help prevent or delay a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes and many other common health conditions.
Prediabetes Risk Factors
Prediabetes can go undetected for years. Regular check-ups with your primary care provider can help identify warning signs when they appear. Be sure to alert them of any changes you may be experiencing. Risk factors of prediabetes may include:
- A close family history of diabetes
- Being overweight
- Being at least 45 years old
- Being physically active less than three times a week
Reversing Prediabetes
Because of the link between obesity and type 2 diabetes, you can do a great deal to reduce your chance of developing the disease by slimming down if you are overweight. This is especially true if diabetes runs in your family. Preventing or delaying the onset of type 2 diabetes is possible. Work with your Warren Clinic primary care provider to set up a plan that works for you.
