What is the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU)?
The Level 1 pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) provides round the clock care at the highest level. Our patients are referred by physicians locally and regionally for treatment of respiratory conditions, trauma, cardiology, gastro-enterology, pediatric surgery, endocrinology, as well as neurology and orthopedic disorders. Critical care doctors and specialized nurses treat the most seriously ill children with the area’s most advanced medical technology. The PICU is one of only two in the state that is fully equipped for pediatric-specific critical care.
Who goes to the PICU?
When a child experiences a life threatening condition they may require critical care in an intensive care unit (ICU). Having your child at the Saint Francis Children's Hospital ICU means that they are receiving compassionate, round-the-clock care by a multidisciplinary team including board certified pediatric intensivists, pediatric ICU nurses, respiratory therapists, child life specialists, supporting consultants and other support staff. Their condition is closely monitored to provide the best possible outcome.
What kind of advanced care can a child get in the PICU?
Our highly-skilled, multidisciplinary teams collaborate to offer advanced care such as Extra-Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO), Renal Replacement Therapy (RRT), high-frequency oscillatory ventilation (HFOV), Neutrally Adjusted Ventilator Assist and inhaled nitric oxide (iNO). The PICU offers a unique blend of advanced technology and family-centered care to provide for the entire family’s physical, emotional and spiritual needs during their child’s ICU stay. The PICU is the recipient of the Blue Ribbon for Excellence award from Professional Research Consultants (PRC). Continuity of care includes instruction and education for family members about the ongoing care for their children and including each family’s psychosocial situation-finances, transportation, insurance-when developing a discharge plan.

Our process begins with prompt response to referrals with emphasis to open lines of communication.
