Skin Lesions

Skin lesions are generally present at birth although it is not uncommon for them to form a couple of months later. Many will disappear within the first year of a child's life. If medical attention is needed, Saint Francis plastic and reconstructive surgeons and staff will work together to diagnose and correct the abnormal development.

Arteriovenous Malformation and Hemangioma are among the most common skin lesions in the United States.

  • Arteriovenous Malformation (AVM) is a tangle of abnormal blood vessels believed to occur as a fetus is developing. These malformations can occur wherever arteries and veins exist, but are most serious when formed in the brain or spinal cord.
  • Hemangioma is a cluster of blood vessels that form abnormally to create a birth mark. Most lesions are benign and resolve themselves by puberty; however, large hemangiomas or those that grow rapidly can lead to complications.

Treatment options for skin lesions include laser therapy, medication and, in some cases, surgery.
