Polydactyly is a common defect in which the fetus develops extra fingers and/or toes. The extra digit(s) is usually smaller than the others. It can be made up of skin and soft tissue that is connected to the hand by skin or it can be a more fully formed digit that is connected to the hand by bone.
Syndactyly is a common defect in which the fetus develops webbed fingers and/or toes. The digits can be complete, meaning that they are joined all the way to the tips, or incomplete, which describes digits that are joined only part way up. The digits are attached by skin and soft tissue or bone.
