At Laureate, we believe family involvement can be essential in the successful recovery from an eating disorder. Just as the eating disorder affects the whole family, we believe the whole family affects the eating disorder treatment.
Each month Laureate hosts Family Week - a three-day family involvement and education program. Family Week includes:
- A comprehensive review of eating disorders including the history, misconceptions and detailed explanations of each illness as well as an overview of how the brain is affected by an eating disorder.
- An overview of medical and psychiatric considerations in the treatment of eating disorders, including how malnutrition affects the body as well as co-occurring conditions like depression, anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder.
- A thorough discussion of nutrition therapy for eating disorders. Adolescent parents will be educated about the “exchange” system in preparation for their daughter’s discharge.
- A presentation to help families understand how to navigate their insurance company and how to advocate for themselves.
- An in-depth explanation of the philosophy and day-to-day activities of the adolescent and adult programs (separate presentations).
- Support groups for family members and loved ones including a separate support group for men and women.
- The opportunity to ask patients questions without your loved one being present - "Table Talk."
- A special session with a guest speaker who will talk about her eating disorder recovery experience.
