Schizophrenia

Schizophrenia is a serious disorder which affects how a person thinks, feels and acts. At Laureate Psychiatric Clinic and Hospital, we encourage early treatment for a better long-term outcome.

Symptoms of Schizophrenia

Changes in ability, behavior and personality occur at various times for people with schizophrenia as they struggle with an illness beyond their control.

Positive symptoms: Hearing voices, suspiciousness, feeling as though they are under constant surveillance, delusions or making up words without meaning.

Negative (deficit) symptoms: Social withdrawal, difficulty in taking care of themselves and inability to feel pleasure. These symptoms cause severe impairment and are often mistaken for laziness.

Cognitive symptoms: Difficulties with concentrating, processing information, understanding the environment and remembering simple tasks.

Mood symptoms: Depression is common, accounting for a very high rate of attempted suicide in people suffering from schizophrenia. Anxiety may also be present as a result of psychosis.

Treatment for Schizophrenia

Schizophrenia treatment involves medications and therapy to reduce the risk of future psychotic episodes and improve relationships. Although medications are the cornerstone of schizophrenia treatment, once psychosis recedes, psychosocial treatments also are important.

Levels of Care:

  • Inpatient: Crisis stabilization and life management skills
  • Outpatient: Individual therapy and medication management

With appropriate treatment, schizophrenia is manageable.
