ADD/ADHD

Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is commonly diagnosed among children and often continues into adulthood. At Laureate Psychiatric Clinic and Hospital, we can diagnose and help you manage familiar symptoms, such as attention issues, hyperactivity and impulsive behavior.

ADHD Symptoms

Depending on a person's age, symptoms may change over time. The following characteristics are considered excessive in someone with ADHD:

  • Fails to give close attention to details or makes careless mistakes in schoolwork, work, etc.
  • Difficulty sustaining attention in tasks or play activities
  • Avoids, dislikes or is reluctant to engage in tasks that require sustained mental effort
  • Easily distracted by extraneous stimuli
  • Forgetful in daily activities
  • Talks excessively
  • Blurts out answers before questions have been completed
  • Difficulty playing or engaging in leisure activities quietly

Diagnosis and Treatment for ADHD

Our professional staff conducts an initial assessment/screening to determine ADHD. The initial assessment/screening includes developmental and academic history, behavior-rating scales based on input from parents and teachers, as well as a child and parent interview.

ADHD is a disorder that is manageable but not curable. Treatment depends on the type and severity of symptoms, coexisting problems (learning disabilities, depression, conduct problems, etc.), school setting, and family stressors. Low level intervention may include medications along with patient education. More aggressive intervention may include behavior modification programs or altering a child's school program. Sometimes marital counseling or divorce mediation are necessary interventions designed to reduce stress in the family.
