Newborn Care

Your little bundle of joy receives only the best of care at Saint Francis Hospital. It's up to you how much time your baby spends in your room. Whether your baby spends most of his or her time beside you or in the nursery, it's great to know our caring and secure 30-bed newborn nursery is just steps away.

Your baby's medical care is directed by your pediatrician. In the newborn nursery, your baby will be screened for bilirubin, receive a metabolic newborn screening, as well as a hearing screening. The focus of the staff in the newborn nursery is family centered care. The staff will partner with you, as the parents, to help you learn how to care for your baby.

Our nursery staff and other healthcare professionals are also on hand to answer any questions you may have. The staff can offer support and advice concerning special needs of a newborn, tips on how to bathe the baby, instructions on how to care for your baby's umbilical cord and other important information that will help you make the transition from hospital to home.

Among the special services we offer our new families are the "Newborn Channel" which highlights issues in breast feeding, baby basics, safety concerns, dads and babies, post partum care and much more. Infant care classes are held daily which cover just about everything you need to know about caring for your baby. Lactation consultants are available to give new mothers plenty of tips on successful breast feeding. At Saint Francis we are committed to making your birthing experience everything you hoped it would be…and more!

If your baby needs special care immediately after delivery, Saint Francis' obstetrical facility is well equipped to provide it. The facility includes four intensive care stations where neonatal specialists and other staff members can work to help stabilize the baby's condition. The Eastern Oklahoma Perinatal Center (EOPC), an intensive care nursery that is part of The Children's Hospital at Saint Francis, is adjacent to the labor and delivery unit.

If it is necessary to admit a baby to the Eastern Oklahoma Perinatal Center due to a serious illness, the staff of neonatologists, neonatal nurses and other healthcare professionals will work together to ensure the best possible outcome. This close affiliation with the intensive care nursery, a unit that serves babies born across the northeastern Oklahoma region, provides babies born at Saint Francis Hospital with a big advantage.
