Cyst Aspiration - A needle is placed in the lump, usually using ultrasound guidance. Fluid is then drained with anticipation that a lump or mass (detected by an X-ray mammogram) will disappear. A post-aspiration mammogram may be recommended or air may be injected back into the cyst cavity to more clearly visualize the cyst wall. Sometimes this procedure, called a pneumocystogram, is performed to inhibit cysts from recurring.
Prebiopsy Localizations of Lesions - Surgeons cannot always feel the suspicious areas revealed on a mammogram. To assist the surgeon in finding the exact place to take a tissue sample, the radiologist performs a localization procedure just prior to sending the patient for an excisional breast biopsy. First, breast X-rays or an ultrasound examination is performed to assure the suspicious area is still present. If it is, the radiologist uses either X-ray mammography or ultrasonography to place a wire into or next to the lesion to direct the surgeon to the lesion.
Galactograms - This is a method to visualize the milk ducts that are the source of colored nipple discharges that test positive for occult blood.
Second Opinion - The Breast Center welcomes patients and physicians to send or bring breast imaging studies for a second reading by a certified mammography radiologist who will review the films and provide consultation reports to the patient and referring physician.
Consultation - Patients are welcome to talk directly with a mammography radiologist to discuss previous or planned imaging services and referral to other breast specialty services. Patients are charged a fee for this service.
Self-Referral - Patients who do not have a referring physician and wish to use the breast imaging services, are welcome to schedule appointments with the Breast Center by calling (918)494-9270.
