Saint Francis Health System Supports Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is the month set aside each year to raise awareness about breast cancer. There are several actions that can be taken to help decrease the risk of developing breast cancer and diagnosing it early if cancer is found. In 2009 more than 2,300 Oklahoman women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and approximately 520 will die from the disease (Cancer Facts and Figures, 2009). Saint Francis Breast Health Services wants women (and men) to know that early detection is the key. Knowing your risk and being proactive helps save lives.

    Know your Risk:

    • A woman’s risk of developing breast cancer increases as she ages.
    • Approximately 20% to 30% of women with breast cancer have a family member with the disease.
    • Being overweight or obese increases breast cancer risk, especially for women after menopause.

    More risk factors.

    Be Proactive:

    • Yearly mammograms are recommended starting at age 40 and continuing for as long as a woman is in good health.
    • A clinical breast exam is recommended every three years for women in their 20s and 30s and every year for women age 40 and older.
    • Women should know how their breasts normally look and feel and report any breast change promptly to their healthcare provider. Breast self-exam is an option for women starting in their 20s.

    More early detection information.

Remind friends and loved ones to schedule a mammogram. October appointments are still available at both locations and Saturday appointments are offered for screening mammograms at the Saint Francis Breast Center location. Call today to find one that fits your schedule!
