Warren Cancer Research FoundationWarren Cancer Research Foundation provides the infrastructure to support the Oklahoma Community Clinical Oncology Program (CCOP)at the Natalie Warren Bryant Cancer Center. As the only CCOP grantee in Oklahoma, Warren Cancer Research Foundation provides area patients access to nationwide cancer prevention and treatment clinical trials. Patients are able to take advantage of these state-of-the-art clinical trials while enjoying the comforts and routine of everyday home life.HistoryIt is said that the responsibility of leadership is to look into the future and ask the right questions. In 1974, the leadership at Saint Francis Hospital asked the question, “How do we make a real difference for cancer patients?” The answer to the crucial question was to include clinical research as an integral part of the cancer program. As a result, in 1975, Saint Francis Hospital became the first community hospital in the United States to serve as a full institutional member of the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG).Membership in ECOG brought National Cancer Institute (NCI) sponsored clinical trials to our community and allowed patients to remain in their hometowns for treatment. Although this provided a much needed option for our cancer patients, the institution faced numerous challenges in conducting clinical research and competing with the large, major academic centers for financial support. In 1983, the NCI realized that 85 percent of cancer patients were treated in the community setting and established the Community Clinical Oncology Program (CCOP) research designation. For the first time, federal funding was available to community hospitals and leveled the research playing field among academic centers and community hospitals. TodayOur participation in the CCOP has provided the groundwork for a multidisciplinary approach to caring for patients with cancer. Clinical research creates the highest standards for cancer care. Participating in clinical research enhances the knowledge of our oncology team and offers additional treatment options to patients. Studies have demonstrated that physicians who participate in clinical research are several years ahead in terms of treatment approaches compared to physicians that do not participate in clinical research. Our community and physicians can be proud of being part of several important advances in the care of cancer patients. We have been involved in the approval of new pathological and radiological diagnostic methods as well as FDA approval of more than 20 new oncology drugs. The dedication and hard work of our staff and the partnership between physicians and patients have contributed greatly to our success. Current Clinical Trials Talk to your physician or oncologist to see if you are eligible to participate in one of the many active trials available at Natalie Warren Bryant Cancer Center.
